Until Friday morning, many local police zones will join the operation and carry out more speed checks than usual.

"The objective of this action is to encourage drivers to respect the speed limits. Many still underestimate the risks associated with excessive speed, one of the main causes of road accidents," says the federal police.

The awareness campaign is organised twice a year. This autumn marathon follows on from its spring version. Last April, more than 1.3 million vehicles were checked in 24 hours, a record. Nearly 4% of drivers were speeding. Mobile speed cameras, in particular, surprised offenders (8.12%), while only 1.69% of motorists who passed in front of a fixed speed camera were in violation.

According to the federal police, it is absolutely necessary to continue checks and awareness-raising
