Scam BIPT(*) - Police

As part of its fight against cybercrime, the TOURNAISIS Police Zone informs you of a new modus operandi .

(*) BIPT(IBPT in French) is the Belgian Institute for Post adn Telephone.

How does it work?

Initially, you will receive a phone call from someone claiming to work for BIPT.

This person will inform you that a case has been opened with their department concerning fraud.

BIPT will put you in direct contact with an Inspector working in ARLON.

This police officer will ask you for your identity card number and will later declare that your name is linked to a money laundering case.

You will be told that the amount embezzled is quite substantial and that you will be put in contact with a Public Prosecutor.

This Public Prosecutor will start by intimidating you by explaining that the facts are serious and that your property will be seized and that you will go to prison.

To show your good cooperation, he will ask you to list your financial assets.

Once this is done, he will explain to you that you can extinguish public action by paying a certain amount of money by paying sums into foreign accounts and also by opening accounts in cryptocurrencies.

To make the fraud more realistic, they will send you a confidentiality clause, an arrest warrant and an order to freeze financial assets to your email inbox.

You will also be informed that you should not call your Local Police as it is corrupted in the case.

As for the police officer, he will ask you to communicate with him via Microsoft Teams.

From that moment on, he will ask you to report on all your actions on a daily basis while multiplying the amounts of money to be paid on various platforms.

What should I do if I receive this kind of call?

Neither the Public Prosecutor's Office nor the Police will ask you for information about your bank accounts by phone or online.

If you receive this type of call, do not give out any personal or banking information.

If possible, write down the call number and then hang up.

If in doubt, contact your local Police (even if you are told they are corrupt!!)

Do not accept any attachments in an email

What to do if you gave your data?

Have you given out your confidential banking information? Call Card Stop immediately on 078 170 170

Have you made a payment? Notify your bank immediately.

Did you pay by credit card? Dispute the transaction via macarte.be (Visa or Mastercard).
