Road safety : Have a good holiday !
Sourcing : Belgian Federal Police
We are coming to the summer holidays, and a boat subject is in order: advice for the holiday route.

Many people will take to the road in search of relaxation, and these are journeys that often have different characteristics from all those made the rest of the year. There are therefore specific tips to give on this occasion.
Indeed, drivers will often drive further, longer and with more load than usual. These are good reasons to pay extra attention to the preparations and the journey.
First of all, the preparations. As you will be driving longer, it is important to leave well rested to avoid pushbacks behind the wheel. Driving at night can avoid traffic jams, but it's not always a safe solution if you haven't been able to rest before.
You also have to prepare your vehicle well! It will drive longer and be more loaded. If you're close to an interview, it may be helpful to do it before you leave. Otherwise, at the very least, remember to check the tire pressure and condition, as well as the oil and windshield washer fluid levels. Also clean windows and headlights for optimal visibility. If you are towing a trailer or caravan, these also need to be checked before you leave, starting with the tyres, which are often the weak point, as they wear out even without driving much, and especially under the action of UV rays.
As for the load, it must not be excessive in weight, it must be well distributed and well secured. The heaviest objects will be placed in the bottom of the trunk, and in any case, not in the roof box. The attachment of roof boxes or bike racks should be checked twice rather than once, even during the journey. The rear shelf of your vehicle is not an extension of the trunk and must remain as unobstructed as possible. In any case, nothing heavy can be there: it is too dangerous in case of braking.
On the way, be careful to keep your safety distance, because your loaded vehicle will need a longer length to brake in an emergency. Similarly, its behavior will be worse in corners, which is one more good reason to moderate your speed.
Let's also remember the classic advice to take regular breaks, at the latest every 2 hours, or even earlier if fatigue overwhelms you. Fatigue is unfortunately a cause of accidents that is largely underestimated by holidaymakers in a hurry to get to their destination! During meal breaks, eat light and avoid alcohol, this will limit the urge to doze!
In summary, you have to prepare the vehicle and its possible trailer, as well as drive with the weight in mind and take regular breaks.
