Riding with an e-scooter

In recent years, alternative modes of transport (also known as "new mobility devices"), which are more environmentally friendly and sometimes faster than traditional modes of transport, have been increasingly present on our streets.

The queen of these new modes of transport? The electric scooter!

It is attracting more and more followers but is not without risks...

What are the main causes of accidents?

Failure to comply with the highway code. Indeed, too many users use the sidewalks or drive in the wrong direction. Inattention. Using a mobile phone while driving or listening to music does not allow the driver to be fully attentive to his surroundings. Finally, wearing generally dark clothing (especially during the winter period) which does not help the driver to make himself visible to other road users.

What are the risks?

Speed. Although it is limited to 25km/h, it is not uncommon to come across scooters whose speed seems much higher. A fall or impact with an obstacle can cause serious damage.

To regulate the use of electric scooters and limit the dangers, regulations were put in place in July 2022. It sets the minimum age of users at 16 years old and formally prohibits the transport of people. So you can't be two people on an electric scooter.

Similar to cyclists, users must follow the same traffic rules as cyclists and must (when available) use cycle paths. But never the sidewalks...

What equipment is mandatory?

A bell audible at 20m, brakes, reflectors (white at the front and red at the rear)... And when visibility is reduced to less than 200 meters, it is mandatory to use a white light at the front and a red light at the rear.

Although not part of the mandatory equipment, we strongly advise users to equip themselves with a helmet and protective equipment (very useful in case of a fall) and to wear light-coloured clothing or clothing equipped with reflective strips.

Stay vigilant and follow the rules for your safety and the safety of other road users. Our police department has planned to strengthen controls in 2025. Scooters that do not comply with the technical conditions listed above may be subject to administrative seizure.
