On December 14, 2023, Donaldo ALVAREZ RUIZ, together with 2 other defendants, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the court of assizes of Flemish Brabant for the manslaughter of Walter VOORDECKERS.
Together with 3 other defendants, he was also convicted for the manslaughter of Ward CAPIAU, the capture and torture of Paul SCHILDERMANS and the enforced disappearance of Serge BERTEN.
The court of assizes ruled that the crimes committed should be considered crimes against humanity under international law.
