Traffic fines: what changes from July 1st, 2026

(Source: Walloon Agency for Road Safety)

Since July 1st, 2026, the amounts of immediate collections applied to traffic offences have been increased by 10%. In concrete terms, when an offence is detected and dealt with immediately, the amount to be paid is now higher. Speeding is also concerned.

These amounts had not been adjusted since 2017.

Amendes routières à partir du 01.07.2026 - Traffic fines from July 1st, 2026

What changes depending on the type of offence

For 1st degree offences, such as not wearing a seat belt or not using your turn signal, the amount increases to 64 euros instead of 58 euros.

2nd degree offences, such as crossing an orange light or overtaking on the right, are now set at 128 euros instead of 116 euros.

3rd degree offences, such as crossing a red light or handling your phone while driving without a suitable support, amount to 191 euros instead of 174 euros.

Finally, 4th degree offences, the most serious, such as making a U-turn on the motorway or failing to obey the signs at a level crossing, are increased to 520 euros instead of 474 euros.

It should be noted that only 4th degree offences committed by foreign drivers can be collected immediately. The Belgian drivers concerned are summoned to appear in court.

Drinking and driving: amounts also on the rise

Immediate perceptions of alcohol-related offences, insofar as they are dealt with on the spot, are also affected by the increase.

For a driver with an alcohol level of at least 0.22 milligrams and less than 0.35 milligrams per litre of exhaled alveolar air (i.e. 0.5 to 0.8 g/l of blood), the fine will be €197 instead of the current €179;

for an alcohol concentration of at least 0.35 milligrams and less than 0.44 milligrams per litre of exhaled alveolar air, the increase will be from 420 euros to 462 euros;

For an alcohol level of at least 0.44 milligrams and less than 0.50 milligrams per litre of exhaled alveolar air, the fine will increase to 636 euros instead of the current 578 euros.

Another change since July 1st: the rules relating to temporary driving bans for driving under the influence of alcohol have been modified. These are now set at 12 hours in all cases when a driver is checked above the authorized limit, whereas previously they could vary between 2, 3, 6 or 12 hours depending on the situation.

Speeding

In the event of speeding, the basic amount is set at 58 euros for the first 10 km/h over the limit, compared to 53 euros previously.

Beyond this threshold, the calculation depends on the place of the offence.

In built-up areas, in 30 km/h zones, in a meeting or residential area, each additional km/h now costs 12 euros (instead of 11 euros). Outside built-up areas, this amount is 7 euros per additional km/h (instead of 6 euros).

In the event of speeding by more than 30 km/h in built-up areas or by more than 40 km/h outside built-up areas, the offender is referred to court.

In addition to all these immediate collection amounts, there is an administrative fee of €10.67 (2026 rate). It covers the costs of processing the file.

Avoiding fines is still possible

The vast majority of these offences can be avoided simply by following the rules of the Highway Code. This of course avoids financial consequences, but above all it preserves your safety and that of other road users.
