On December 14, 2023, Manuel Antonio CALLEJAS Y CALLEJAS, together with 3 other defendants, was sentenced by the court of assizes of Flemish Brabant to life imprisonment for the manslaughter of Ward CAPIAU, the capture and torture of Paul SCHILDERMANS and the enforced disappearance of Serge BERTEN.
The court of assizes ruled that the crimes committed should be considered crimes against humanity under international law.
